Manakeesh is a Lebanese restaurant in Philadelphia, known for its excellent, traditional cuisine. The goal of this project was to update the branding of a local restaurant to elevate their image to the same level as the quality of the food they serve. My approach for this brand was to dive into the traditional elements of Lebanese culture and aesthetics. Taking inspiration from tile-work and architectural flourishes like the triforia and their accompanying lattices, I created a pattern system that comes to life in the delicate papercraft seen in the matchboxes and Arak bottle label. The wordmark is inspired by the calligraphic style of Arabic script, focusing on flow and flourishes. This not only references the tradition, but also reflects the bold yet modest nature of the cuisine itself.
